For those of us that already invest in advanced anti-ageing treatments, we know the benefits that come from treating our hands as well as our face, neck and décolletage. If you are new to seeking professional anti-ageing skin treatments, then you will still be aware that ageing hands can belie a fresh and rejuvenated face.
The skin on the back of our hands is a give-away when it comes to age; this is because they are open to the weather and environment just like our face and neck. As we age, our skin thins and its structure and function becomes impaired, which is especially noticeable on the hands. Although our hands are generally the first place to show the ravages of time, they are sadly often neglected. Wrinkles, sunspots, loss of fat and thinning skin are often the result of years of aggressive treatment and sun damage.
We are all different, and our unique DNA means that we age differently. Because of this, at Kate Kerr we believe that no two patients or treatment plans should be the same. Kate will provide an individual treatment programme that is specifically designed for you, to improve the appearance of skin ageing on your hands.
At Kate Kerr London, we have chosen two proven techniques that are effective at helping reverse the signs of ageing in this delicate area. After a consultation, we choose between the award winning Dermapen Micro-Needling device and an Advanced Skin Peel to rejuvenate the skin and stimulate collagen growth.
We believe that the best possible results are achieved though a course of treatments using one, or a combination of these techniques. The fusion of these cutting edge methods, high potency antioxidants and growth factors offer solutions to:
Skin ageing is a degenerative process caused by intrinsic (chronological) and extrinsic (environmental) ageing. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors contribute to visible signs of skin ageing of the hands, including:
Intrinsic ageing is a natural process, determined by internal factors and is programmed by our genes. Unfortunately, we have very little control over this. Extrinsic ageing, also known as photo-ageing, is caused by external factors that we are regularly exposed to and can be prevented or minimised. External elements such as sunlight, pollution, nutritional intake, smoking, stress and lack of sleep are among the most common factors. The single biggest culprit is the sun! Extrinsic ageing is the predominant ageing factor for our hands.
Traditionally the skin on the back of the hands has been difficult to treat due to its thinness and fragility. At Kate Kerr London we have two proven techniques effective in helping reverse the signs of ageing in this delicate area. A thorough skin consultation will be carried out to decide which treatment is most suitable for you. Time is then taken to help you understand the chosen procedure, its possible side effects, and the importance of after care.
Your skin peel treatment is designed specifically for your hand ageing concerns whilst taking into consideration your skin colour and photo-type. Your skin’s health and concerns determine the type of skin peel selected.
After a thorough cleansing the skin is prepped and the chosen skin peel is applied. Once the peel has been applied for the desired length of time, the peel is neutralized. A cooling, hyaluronic acid based gel is used to soothe and hydrate the skin. A tolerable burning or stinging sensation may be felt during the application of the peel.
The treatment area is disinfected and a topical anesthetic cream is applied and left to activate for 45 minutes. Once anaesthetised the numbing cream is removed, the skin disinfected and a serum containing growth factors is applied. Using a single use sterile treatment tip, the skin is needled in a ‘Union Jack’ pattern. Once the micro-needling is finished the skin is cleansed using a gentle antiseptic cleanser followed by an ice cold compress to soothe the treated area. A cooling, hyaluronic acid based gel is used to soothe and hydrate the skin before the application of a mineral SPF50 sunscreen.
Long term results and skin maintenance are achieved by a course of one or a combination of advanced skin peels and micro-needling treatments, accompanied by a preventative, corrective and protective homecare regime.
This depends on the treatment undertaken.
The type of skin peel applied determines the skin’s post treatment reaction. You may notice that the skin is more red and feels tighter than usual for up to two hours afterwards. The skin may feel tight or dry and you may experience mild flaking in certain areas, for a few days. Rarely, you may experience crusting of the skin or slight swelling.
Day 1: Possible erythema and red appearance which varies between people.
Day 2: A red or pink hue persists like a moderate sunburn. Light swelling may be noticeable.
Day 3: Skin may still be slightly pink. Swelling has usually subsided.
On subsequent days the skin may feel tight and dry.
