Skin ageing is a natural process caused by intrinsic (chronological) and extrinsic (environmental) ageing. These factors contribute to the visible signs of skin ageing, such as a loss of skin firmness and laxity, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage and hyper-pigmentation, irregular skin tone and texture, large pores, dry skin and a loss of facial volume.

Intrinsic ageing is determined by internal factors and is programmed by our genes. At Kate Kerr London, our aim is to support this natural process by building up your skin’s health and strength. Extrinsic ageing, also known as photo-ageing, is caused by external factors such as sunlight, pollution, nutritional intake, smoking, stress and lack of sleep. That’s why our lifestyle choices have an important role to play too.

The natural ageing process causes the surface layers of the skin, known as the epidermis, to thin and the number of melanocytes – the pigment producing cells – to decrease. In sun-exposed areas, the remaining melanocytes increase in size. This leads to the skin appearing thinner and paler, with large, pigmented areas known as age spots, lentigos or liver spots. The production of oil slows down causing dryness and the blood vessels become more fragile, increasing the incidence of broken capillaries and redness.

You might notice a loss of fat under the skin in areas such as the cheeks, temples, chin, nose and eyes. Collagen and elastin are the fibres that give our skin its structure and the breakdown of these is what leads to fine lines, wrinkles and a loss of elasticity.

Traditionally, the skin on the back of the hands has been difficult to treat due to its thinness and fragility. At Kate Kerr London, we have four proven techniques which are effective in helping to improve the signs of ageing in this delicate area. A thorough skin consultation will be carried out to decide which treatment is most suitable for you. Time is then taken to help you understand the chosen procedure, its possible side effects, and the importance of aftercare.

Our skin peel treatment is designed specifically for your hand ageing concerns, whilst taking into consideration your skin colour and skin type. Your skin’s health and concerns determine the type of skin peel that is selected – we may choose to apply multiple peels in a layering fashion in order to target specific symptoms.

After a thorough cleansing, the skin is prepped and the chosen skin peel is applied. Once the peel has been applied for the desired length of time, the peel is neutralised. A cooling, hyaluronic acid-based gel is used to soothe and hydrate the skin. A tolerable burning or stinging sensation may be felt during the application of the peel.

With our Dermapen Microneedling treatment, the treatment area is disinfected and a topical anaesthetic cream is applied and left to activate for 45 minutes. Once anaesthetised, the numbing cream is removed, the skin disinfected and a serum containing growth factors is applied. Using a single-use sterile treatment tip, the skin is then needled in a ‘Union Jack’ pattern.

Once the microneedling is finished, the skin is cleansed using a gentle anti-septic cleanser followed by an ice-cold compress to soothe the treated area. A cooling, hyaluronic acid-based gel is used to soothe and hydrate the skin before the application of a mineral SPF50 sunscreen.

With our Intense Pulsed Light method, we pulse the targeted area using a hand-held Venus IPL device. The specific levels of volts and pulsations are set at precise levels for your skin concern and Fitzpatrick type (skin colour). We work thoroughly over the hand to give you an active and results-driven treatment, which helps to achieve optimal results.

The revolutionary Venus Viva Nano Fractional Radio Frequency with Smart Scan technology is designed to resurface the skin’s texture whilst simultaneously targeting skin discoloration by improving vascularity and hyperpigmentation.

During the treatment, we use the hand-held Venus Viva device to treat the targeted area of the skin. The Venus Nano-Fractional Radio Frequency is set to the exact parameters for your skin type and skin concern and we work thoroughly and methodically to give you an active and stimulating treatment, helping to achieve extremely effective results for both skin texture and tone.

Long term results and skin maintenance are achieved by a course of one or a combination of Advanced Skin Peels, Intense Pulsed Light, Nano Fractional Radio Frequency and Microneedling treatments, accompanied by a preventative, corrective and protective homecare regime.

For skin peels, we would recommend a course of 4-6 treatments to achieve the desired results, with one treatment every 2 weeks. For the Dermapen Microneedling treatment, we would recommend a course of between 3-6 treatments with a separation time of 4-6 weeks. For the Intense Pulsed Light, we recommend a course of four treatments every 4-6 weeks. For the Venus Viva Nano-Fractional Radio Frequency, a course of four treatments, 4-6 weeks apart, is recommended for optimal results.

This depends on the treatment undertaken. For a Skin Peel, the type of skin peel applied determines the skin’s post-treatment reaction. You may notice that the skin is more red and feels tighter than usual for up to two hours afterwards. The skin may feel tight or dry and you may experience mild flaking in certain areas for a few days. Rarely, you may experience crusting of the skin or slight swelling.

With Dermapen Microneedling and Venus Viva Nano-Fractional Radio Frequency, on day one, you may experience erythema (a type of skin rash caused by injured or inflamed capillaries) and a red appearance. On day two, a red or pink hue persists like a moderate sunburn and light swelling may be noticeable. On day three, your skin may still be slightly pink, but swelling has usually subsided. On subsequent days the skin may feel tight and dry.
